Historically, etching produced white frosted semi-opaque surfaces on glass. In modern times, a pattern can be drawn and transferred to the glass, where a high-pressure stream of aluminum oxide grit can make a specific design. Varied dwell times now yield degrees of opacity, for more complexity.

A newer process called sand carving uses multiple intensities of blasting to form depth and textures. Hand painting with special colored glass paints can bring additional excitement to this medium.
